WireGuard
WireGuard is a newer protocol with a small codebase. It connects quickly and usually gives the best speed, which makes it a good default for most people.
It encrypts traffic with ChaCha20. WireGuard is also what you use to set up TVPN on a router, with a configuration file from your dashboard.
OpenVPN (UDP and TCP)
OpenVPN has been in wide use for many years and works on almost any network. TVPN uses AES-256-GCM encryption with OpenVPN.
UDP is faster and is the one to try first. TCP is slower but more stable on networks that drop or limit UDP traffic, such as some hotel, office or school Wi-Fi.
IKEv2
IKEv2 handles network changes well. When your phone moves from Wi-Fi to mobile data, it can pick the connection back up quickly.
TVPN uses AES-256-GCM encryption with IKEv2. It is a good choice on phones and tablets that switch networks often.
Which one to choose
Start with WireGuard. If it fails to connect or keeps dropping, try OpenVPN UDP, and then OpenVPN TCP on restrictive networks. On a phone that moves around a lot, IKEv2 is worth a try.
All protocols are included in every plan, and you can change them at any time. The new protocol is used the next time you connect.
- Open TVPN and go to Settings > Connection > Protocol
- Pick WireGuard, OpenVPN UDP, OpenVPN TCP or IKEv2
- Disconnect and connect again
