How split tunneling works
Normally, once TVPN is connected, every app on the device uses the encrypted tunnel. With split tunneling, you make a list of apps, and TVPN treats that list differently from everything else.
You can work in two directions. Either the listed apps skip the VPN and everything else is protected, or only the listed apps use the VPN and everything else goes direct. Pick the one that leads to the shorter list.
Common reasons to use it
Some services need to see your real location. Local banking apps, delivery apps and printers or TVs on your home network often work better outside the VPN.
It also helps with bandwidth. A large game download or a video call can go direct while your browser stays on TVPN. Some people do the opposite and route only one browser through the VPN.
Setting it up
Split tunneling is available in every plan. Open the app settings, pick the mode, and add apps from the list of installed programs.
Changes apply after you reconnect. If an app was already open, restart it so its existing connections follow the new rule.
- Open TVPN and go to Settings > Split tunneling
- Choose a mode: exclude selected apps, or use the VPN only for selected apps
- Add the apps you want and reconnect
Things to keep in mind
Apps that skip the VPN use your real IP address and are not encrypted by TVPN. Only put apps on that list when you are comfortable with that.
The kill switch protects apps that use the VPN. Apps you excluded keep working on your normal connection even if the tunnel drops. Menu names can look a little different from one device to another.
